It took seeing his emphatic live performance at Reading 09 for me to agree that he had something special. For one thing, he did not take of his giant mouse helmet at all, despite the rainforesty atmosphere in the big top in the middle of summer. His set was a mixture of mostly his own songs, as well as a few remixes here and there, including Daft Punk's 'Harder, better, faster, stronger'. The zombie like state the music and lights had the crowd in was too much.
Then came the release of 'For lack of a better name', which I enjoyed much more than the former. My favourite tracks found in 'FML', 'Moar ghosts 'n' stuff' and 'Hi friend!'
I love the way he manages to change his sound ever so slightly with each album while keeping the base Deadmau5 bass and beat sound the same. His continuous mixes of his albums are seamless and brilliant, so I recommend you hit up Spotify and have a go.
I was completely gutted at missing him playing again at his biggest shows yet at Earls Court, at the time the mass of snow that was falling seemed like to much of a tribulation to get up there and back - WHAT A NIGHTMARE!
His latest album release '4x4 = 12' (apparently he's innumerate too) has lent itself to the more upbeat electronic/house sound, with influence from the ever more popular (and mainstream) genre that is Dubstep. And yet again the mau5 makes it work his own way.
'Raise your weapon' has become one of my favourite songs of the moment, soft keyboard sounds accompanying a beautiful female voice that launches into a mellow club banger. Animal rights is another excellent track, more upbeat than most; one to dance to.
I have not a bad word to say about this guy, and I can only regret missing my chance to see him at Earls court, for what could have been one of the most breathtaking shows ever.
Long live Deadmau5!
